Social Interior, a furniture subscription provider in Japan, raises $9.2M

On September 15, 2022, Social Interior, a furniture subscription service provider, announced that it raised a total of approximately 1.33 billion yen through equity and loans. Lotte Ventures Japan and other investors participated in the equity round.

Social Interior is a startup that aims to realize a furniture recycling society under the vision "Toward a society where good things circulate" and was selected as one of Toyo Keizai's "100 Amazing Ventures" in 2021. The company's founder, Ken Machino, after completing graduate school at Sophia University and working for Hewlett-Packard Japan, founded Kamarck Japan (later renamed Social Interiors) in 2016, arriving at the current idea of "furniture subscription" the following year.

Launched in March 2018, the new furniture and appliance subscription service "Subsc-Life" is a monthly subscription service that allows you to use the goods you need when you need them, without owning them. You can use well-designed furniture and appliances without paying much initial cost, and you can buy back if you like them. While rentals usually exceed the original price of the product if you continue to use them, Subsc-Life sets a monthly fee that does not exceed the price of the product.

“Subsc-Life Off-Price,” an off-price market for furniture and appliances launched in January 2021, allows manufacturers to list their idle inventory and corporate reused items, and is the first in the industry to distribute a portion of the proceeds to the manufacturers and partners who provided the good items each time the furniture is sold.

The funding from this round will be used to expand its market share of the “subsc-life,” a furniture subscription service and the “subsc-life off-price,” furniture off-price market, as well as accelerate creation of a recycling-oriented society by encouraging the reuse of furniture and the option of using furniture without owning it.
